Pharmacy Technician Certification in California

Pharmacy technicians in California must have licenses in order to work. Applicants must have a high school diploma or its equivalent. Additionally, you must meet one or more of the following three criteria to be licensed as a pharmacy technician in the state of California:

1. Hold any of the following degrees or certifications:
• An Associate Degree in Pharmacy Technology;
• Completion of any other course that provides a minimum of 240 hours of instruction as specified in Title 16 California Code of Regulation section 1793.6(c);
• A training course accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP); or  Graduation from a school of pharmacy accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE)

You are required to submit the Affidavit of Completed Coursework or Graduation for Pharmacy Technician with your license application.

2. Be certified by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). You must include the original or a true copy of your PTCB certificate along with your application. According to California requirements, a true copy is one that has been certified or notarized.

3. Qualify with training provided by one of the branches of the federal armed services (Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, et al). Include a copy of your DD214 along with your application.

Applications must include a passport sized photograph, a sealed original Self-Query Report from the National Practitioner Data Bank Healthcare Integrity and Protection Data Bank (NPDB-HIPDB), fingerprints (via Live Scan or a fingerprint card) and a non-refundable check, money order, or cashier’s check in the amount of $80.

Note that the application may take 60 days or more for processing, and status checks are not available until your application has been on file for at least 90 days.
